Austrian Police Discover Rat Poison in Recalled HiPP Baby Food, Prompting Safety Concerns
Police in Austria have discovered rat poison in a jar of HiPP baby food, leading to a recall of the product from over 1,000 SPAR supermarkets across the country. The affected product, HiPP Vegetable Carrot with Potato jars, was found to potentially contain a dangerous substance, raising concerns about tampering. The discovery was made after a customer reported a suspicious jar, which tested positive for rat poison. The jars in question were identified by a red circle sticker on the bottom and signs of tampering such as an opened or damaged lid, missing safety seal, or unusual smell. Initial lab tests on similar jars in the Czech Republic and Slovakia also indicated the presence of a toxic substance. HiPP has stated that the situation appears to involve external criminal interference affecting the SPAR Austria distribution channel. The recall is a precautionary measure, and customers are advised not to consume the product, with refunds offered for returned jars.
