Mercer University Professor James Davis May Awarded Prestigious Amy Lowell Traveling Poetry Scholarship
Dr. James Davis May, an associate professor of English and director of creative writing at Mercer University, has been awarded the Amy Lowell Traveling Poetry Scholarship. This highly competitive and valuable annual scholarship is granted to an American-born poet, enabling them to reside outside of North America for a full year. The scholarship, established in 1953, requires recipients to live abroad for one year and submit three poems written during their travels to the trustees. Dr. May expressed his astonishment and gratitude for receiving the award, noting the distinguished list of past winners, which includes many influential figures in American poetry. He plans to use his time abroad to promote his upcoming third book, 'My Lost Saints,' and to begin writing his next poetry collection, focusing on different definitions of the sacred by visiting sacred sites in Ireland, Italy, France, and the UK.
