Gilberto Cárdenas, Advocate for Chicano and Latino Art, Passes Away at 79
Gilberto Cárdenas, a prominent sociologist and advocate for Chicano and Latino art, has died at the age of 79 in Austin, Texas. Cárdenas was a key figure in the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, using his photography to document and support the cause. He was instrumental in promoting Latino identity through academia and art, establishing Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and later founding the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Cárdenas and his wife amassed a significant collection of Latino art, much of which was donated to major institutions like the Smithsonian and the Blanton Museum of Art.
