Author Charles Gaines, Known for 'Pumping Iron,' Passes Away at 84
Charles Gaines, the author who significantly contributed to popularizing bodybuilding through his book and documentary 'Pumping Iron,' has died at the age of 84. Gaines, who collaborated with George Butler on the book, helped bring bodybuilding into the mainstream, introducing figures like Arnold Schwarzenegger to a wider audience. The book and subsequent documentary highlighted the sport's vibrant culture and were instrumental in elevating bodybuilding from obscurity. Gaines's work not only chronicled the sport but also celebrated its unique community, which was largely unknown to the general public at the time. His daughter, Greta Gaines, confirmed his passing but did not disclose the cause of death.
