Historic Whitewater River Flood Displaces Residents in Indiana and Ohio
Severe flooding along the Whitewater River has led to widespread evacuations in southeastern Indiana and western Hamilton County, Ohio. The river crested at 25.29 feet in Brookville, Indiana, marking the third-highest crest in recorded history, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Emergency responders have rescued dozens of residents trapped in flooded homes, with 18 people currently staying at the Harrison Community Center. Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for several low-lying areas, including Longnecker, Pinhook, and Cranes Run, while voluntary evacuations are underway in other regions. Emergency shelters have been set up in Lawrenceburg, Laurel, and Connersville to accommodate displaced residents. The flooding has caused significant damage to homes and businesses, with water levels reaching chest-deep in some areas.
