Tick-Borne Diseases on the Rise: ER Visits Spike Across the U.S.
Emergency room visits for tick bites have surged by over 25% nationwide in April 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to CDC data. The Northeast has been particularly affected as tick populations increase with the onset of warmer weather. Ticks, small parasites that feed on blood, can transmit a variety of diseases, including Lyme disease, alpha-gal syndrome, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. Lyme disease remains the most common tick-borne illness in the U.S., with an estimated 476,000 cases treated annually. Other diseases, such as alpha-gal syndrome, which causes severe allergic reactions to red meat, are also on the rise as ticks expand into new regions. The CDC emphasizes the importance of preventive measures, such as using EPA-registered insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, and conducting regular tick checks after spending time outdoors.
