Port Authority to Cease Acceptance of Old PATH SmartLink Cards by September 1
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced that starting September 1, the SmartLink and MetroCards will no longer be accepted as payment methods for the PATH train system. This change marks the end of an era for New Jersey commuters who have relied on these cards for transit across the Hudson River. The transition is part of a broader move towards the TAPP card system, which was introduced in 2023. The TAPP system allows riders to use credit cards, digital wallets, or TAPP cards for payment. Currently, 96% of PATH riders have already adopted the new system, which also offers unlimited single-day, seven-day, and 30-day passes.
