Polar Night Energy Expands Sand Battery Project to Slash Carbon Emissions
Polar Night Energy is expanding its sand battery project in Finland, aiming to double its capacity with a new 250 megawatt-hour facility in Vaaksy. The current sand battery, located in Pornainen, stores 100 megawatt-hours of energy and has significantly reduced carbon emissions by 70% in the local community. The sand battery operates by heating air with electricity, storing it in sand, and releasing it through a heat exchanger. This innovative approach allows the community to schedule energy purchases from renewable sources like wind and solar when prices are low, further reducing costs. The new facility, set to be completed by summer 2027, will use slightly more sand but will be more efficient due to its larger size.
