Alpena School Board Members Face Recall Over Controversial Decisions
In Alpena, Michigan, petitions are circulating to recall three members of the Alpena Public Schools board: Eric Lawson, Sarah Costain, and Monica Dziesinski. The recall effort, led by Yvonne Johnson, cites several controversial decisions made by the board members. These include rejecting a $150,000 grant for a rain garden at Alpena High School, awarding a paving contract to a higher bidder, and hiring a second law firm for the school district. Johnson argues that these decisions were not in the best interest of the school district and its students. The board members have defended their actions, citing concerns over the long-term maintenance of the rain garden and the quality of the paving materials. Costain is also criticized for missing a significant number of board meetings during her first year in office, which she attributes to personal emergencies.
