Australian Travelers Shift Focus from U.S. to Asia Amid Declining U.S. Travel Demand
Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, as reported by the ATIA Travel Trends April 2026 report, indicates a significant shift in travel patterns among Australians. Outbound travel to the United States has decreased by 4.8% for the year ending February 2026, with a sharper decline of 9.7% in February alone. In contrast, travel to Asian destinations such as Vietnam, China, and Japan has seen substantial increases, with growth rates of 16.1%, 15.9%, and 15.6% respectively. This trend is not limited to outbound travel; inbound travel from the U.S. to Australia has also softened, growing only 4% compared to a national average of 9.5%. The data precedes the escalation of U.S. tariff announcements in early April 2026, which may further influence travel trends.
