Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby Permanently Canceled Due to Climate Change
The Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby, a popular dogsled race in Minnesota, has been permanently canceled due to climate change. The event, which traditionally started in downtown Excelsior and covered a 40-mile route on Lake Minnetonka, faced cancellations in 2024, 2025, and this year due to unsafe conditions. Organizers have cited the increasingly unpredictable and warm weather patterns as the primary reason for the decision. The race, which was a significant local event, has been unable to ensure the safety of participants and dogs due to the lack of consistent cold weather and stable ice conditions.
