UK Atomic Energy Authority Achieves Milestone in Nuclear Fusion with Higher Plasma Pressure
The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has announced a significant breakthrough in nuclear fusion technology, achieving higher plasma pressure during its fifth experimental campaign. This development is crucial for future fusion power plants, which require operation at extremely high temperatures, pressures, and densities while maintaining precise plasma control. The experiments, conducted through 2025 and 2026, produced over 1,100 fusion plasmas. The UKAEA's MAST Upgrade team explored advanced operating regimes to suppress damaging instabilities, such as Edge Localised Modes (ELMs), which can release significant energy and damage plant components. The team successfully accessed four stable, high-performance plasma regimes, demonstrating the potential for practical fusion energy.
