El Niño's Return Signals Potentially Severe Weather for California This Winter
El Niño, a significant climate pattern, has re-emerged, potentially bringing severe weather conditions to California this winter. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, there is a 97% chance that El Niño will be 'strong' or 'very strong' through December. Historically, El Niño has been associated with increased rainfall and stormy weather in Southern California, Texas, and Florida. The phenomenon, characterized by warmer waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, can lead to above-average rainfall, risking landslides and high-tide flooding in Southern California. The 2015-16 El Niño caused record coastal erosion along California beaches. This year's event is expected to prolong an existing marine heat wave off Southern California, affecting marine life and potentially increasing shark sightings.
