Mike McCormick Identifies Founder Shortage as Key Bottleneck in AI Safety Development
Mike McCormick, founder of Halcyon, asserts that the primary impediment to progress in AI safety, biosecurity, and cybersecurity is not a lack of capital, but rather a scarcity of experienced, mission-driven founders. Speaking on The Cognitive Revolution, McCormick highlighted that many organizations working on critical AI infrastructure are led by individuals who lack experience in scaling companies, managing large teams, or holding senior government positions. Halcyon, operating as a hybrid nonprofit grant-maker and venture capital fund, aims to address this gap by identifying and supporting talented leaders in these fields. Over three years, Halcyon has helped launch approximately 30 organizations, collectively raising around half a billion dollars, by focusing on the crucial initial stages of company formation. McCormick emphasizes that while capital is available, there aren't enough qualified individuals to effectively utilize it for developing robust AI safety measures.
