Australian Prime Minister Announces New Digital Duty of Care Laws Targeting Social Media Algorithms
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced new 'Digital Duty of Care' laws in Australia aimed at giving users more control over their social media feeds. Under these proposed changes, social media companies would be required to offer users a choice between algorithm-recommended personalized content and content solely from friends and chosen creators. The legislation, dubbed 'My Feed, My Way,' seeks to empower Australians by allowing them to opt out of algorithmic content. Additionally, the laws propose significant penalties, including fines of up to $100 million, for social media giants that fail to comply. The initiative also focuses on protecting users under 18 from harmful content, such as material promoting eating disorders, misogyny, pornography, and dangerous behaviors. This move follows previous Australian legislation that barred children under 16 from major social media platforms.
