Marysville Prosecutor's Office Receives 43 Animal Cruelty Charges Against Suspected Breeder

The Marysville Prosecutor’s Office has received 43 counts of second-degree animal cruelty and one count related to dog breeding following a weeks-long investigation. These charges stem from an alleged “extreme breeding and hoarding” situation in Marysville, Washington. On August 31, 42 West Highland Terriers and two other dogs of an unknown breed were rescued from a trailer. Marysville police reported on September 6 that many of the dogs were found matted, covered in feces, soaked in urine, and some exhibited signs of medical distress. The individual involved has not yet been charged, and it is unclear if an arrest warrant has been issued. The rescued dogs are currently recovering at the Everett Animal Shelter. One young dog became ill with suspected parvovirus, leading to a quarantine for all the dogs as a precaution. The quarantine is expected to be lifted on September 21, after which shelter staff can resume comprehensive care, including grooming and nail trimming.

The test provides an estimated age and a 'prediction interval,' which is a range of dates likely to contain the dog's true birthday, with a 77% confidence rate. The test requires a separate cheek swab sample from other Embark DNA tests.
