Massachusetts Towns Face Disruption Due to Cyber Attack on Emergency Communications
Officials in several Massachusetts towns, including Pepperell, Dunstable, Townsend, and Ashby, have reported a cyber attack that disrupted phone communications for their regional dispatch center and public safety departments. The attack, discovered on a Tuesday morning, affected non-emergency and business phone lines for police, fire, and EMS departments, as well as the Patriot Regional Emergency Communications Center (PRECC). Despite the disruption, the local 911 system remains operational, and there is currently no evidence of private user information being compromised. The towns have engaged insurance providers, cybersecurity specialists, and law enforcement to investigate and mitigate the attack. While Townsend's phone lines were briefly down and have been restored, other towns continue to experience outages.
