President Trump Administration Seeks to Drill in Sacred Chaco Canyon, Sparking Controversy
The Trump Administration has proposed revoking protections for approximately 336,425 acres surrounding Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico, a site sacred to Native American tribes. This move would allow for increased oil and gas drilling in the area, which has been opposed by local Native American communities, including the Diné and Pueblo peoples. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has reduced the public-comment period on this proposal to 14 days, prompting urgency among opponents who argue that the area holds significant cultural and historical value.
