Flash Flooding and Extreme Heat Threaten Millions Across U.S.
Weather warnings are in effect for millions of Americans this week as heavy rain and storms impact the mid-Atlantic states and the Carolinas, while a dangerous heat wave intensifies across the Gulf Coast and Central U.S. According to NOAA, tropical moisture colliding with a strong cold front is generating flash flood warnings and repeated storms through Friday, July 24, in areas stretching from Kentucky and West Virginia to New Jersey and the Carolinas. Rainfall totals are expected to range from 2 to 5 inches, with localized amounts up to 8 inches in eastern North Carolina and Virginia's Hampton Roads area. Concurrently, a heat wave is forecast to expand westward by July 27, with heat indexes reaching up to 115°F (46°C) in some locations. NOAA warns of accumulated heat stress due to record-breaking overnight lows and consecutive days of hazardous heat.
