Hampshire College Announces Closure Due to Financial Struggles and Low Enrollment
Hampshire College, a liberal arts institution in Amherst, Massachusetts, has announced its permanent closure following the fall semester due to financial difficulties and declining enrollment. Founded in 1965, the college's board of trustees cited significant financial pressures exacerbated by external factors as the primary reasons for the decision. Despite efforts to increase enrollment, refinance debt, and generate new revenue through land sales, the college was unable to establish a stable financial foundation. The lack of enrollment has led to severe budget cuts, making it unsustainable to continue operations. Final-year students will be allowed to complete their degrees at Hampshire College, while other students can transfer to partner institutions. The college will also refund deposits for all accepted students.
