Teen Swimmer Missing in Rockaways Amid Search Efforts
A 17-year-old boy went missing while swimming near Beach 73rd Street and Shore Front Parkway in the Rockaways, Queens, on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation involving the FDNY, NYPD, and U.S. Coast Guard. Despite their efforts, no progress was reported within the first three hours of the search. The situation was further complicated as lifeguards are not yet stationed on New York City beaches, with the official summer season set to begin this coming weekend. In a show of community support, a group of beachgoers formed a human chain to assist in the search, but officers later evacuated a portion of the beach for safety reasons.
