Liberian Registry Advocates for Expanded Sanctions Compliance Checks on Seafarers
The Liberian Registry, the world's largest shipping registry, is advocating for the extension of sanctions compliance checks to include seafarers, beginning with the credentialing process. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance compliance verification protocols within the maritime industry. The registry, which holds a 17 percent share of the global flag-services market, is pushing for coordinated action among shipping stakeholders, including shipowners, operators, managers, crewing agencies, and flag states, to maintain seafarer compliance. The Liberian Registry is integrating compliance checks into its license application and credential issuance processes, reinforcing identity verification and document integrity. Additionally, the registry is transitioning to digital documentation for seafarers, utilizing QR codes for easier verification by port state control officials, which is expected to reduce inspection delays.
