Mayor Mamdani Extends Pied-à-Terre Tax Exemption Deadline Amid Confusion
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has extended the deadline for homeowners to apply for an exemption from the city's pied-à-terre tax. Initially set for August 21, the deadline is now September 18. This extension comes after confusion arose from a database listing over 900,000 properties potentially subject to the tax, causing concern among homeowners. The tax targets secondary residences valued over $5 million, and letters were sent to 17,000 addresses suspected of being such properties. The city is increasing outreach efforts to assist homeowners in proving their primary residence status.
