Urban Alchemy Study Shows Fewer Police Reports at Staffed Intersections, Crime Relocation Unconfirmed
A new peer-reviewed study has found a 20% reduction in police-recorded incidents at 41 intersections staffed by Urban Alchemy workers. However, the study could not definitively determine if this reduction represents a net decrease in crime or merely a shift in criminal activity to other locations. The authors tested this by removing immediately adjacent intersections from the comparison group, which rendered the daytime effect statistically insignificant. Property crime, specifically, showed no change. Urban Alchemy, a nonprofit organization, was awarded a $22.51 million contract by San Francisco in January, extending through June 2027, to provide safety services.
