Springfield Firefighters Union Criticizes Temporary Brownouts as Unsafe
The Springfield Professional Firefighters Union has raised concerns over temporary brownouts at local fire stations, citing safety risks for both firefighters and the public. Due to staffing shortages, some stations, including Station 6, are not fully operational at times. The union argues that reduced staffing increases wait times and pressure on personnel. Fire Chief Jacob King explained that the brownouts are a measure to manage mandatory overtime, which has been implemented due to several firefighters being on leave or modified duty. The division responded to over 1,600 calls in March, with a significant portion being EMS calls. King emphasized the city's commitment to providing effective emergency services despite the challenges.
