Malcolm Winter Philbrook's Legacy Celebrated in Obituary
Malcolm Winter Philbrook, a prominent figure in Auburn, passed away on April 7, 2026, at his home in Fortunes Rocks Beach. Known affectionately as 'Fuzzy,' Philbrook was a respected community leader and family patriarch. He was born on February 18, 1934, and had a distinguished career in law and banking, serving as a director of Patron-Oxford Mutual Insurance Company and Peoples Savings Bank, which later became Banknorth Group. Philbrook was deeply involved in community service, holding leadership roles in organizations such as the United Way, YMCA, and the Lewiston Auburn Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in establishing the Auburn-Lewiston Sports Hall of Fame and the Auburn Recreation Department's acquisition of the Hasty Memorial Armory. Philbrook's contributions extended to the Winter Foundation, where he co-founded the Hoop Basketball Camp, benefiting Maine's youth. He is survived by his five children, 18 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
