European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde Urges Europe to Develop AI Self-Sufficiency
Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), has called for Europe to enhance its self-sufficiency in artificial intelligence (AI). Lagarde emphasized the potential threat of being cut off from AI technologies controlled by the U.S. and China. This sentiment is echoed by George Williamson, head of the Alan Turing Institute, who stated that the UK must not become dependent on foreign AI systems that could be restricted or switched off. Williamson highlighted that both political and commercial pressures could lead to a lack of access to crucial AI technologies, making a strong domestic position in AI essential for national resilience. The widespread use of similar AI models in finance, with nearly nine out of ten significant euro area banks utilizing generative AI, underscores the importance of this issue. Lagarde also noted that reliance on a small number of AI models could pose significant risks to financial stability if access were to be lost.
