Mexico City Residents 'Gatekeeping' Local Spots Amid Rising Tourism
Residents of Mexico City are increasingly engaging in 'gatekeeping' behavior, withholding information about their favorite local spots from tourists due to concerns over overtourism. This trend is a direct response to the significant increase in visitors, which has led to higher prices, increased crowds, and a perceived erosion of local culture. For instance, Luz Celaya, a long-time resident, observed her beloved second-hand clothing market (paca) become a tourist magnet, resulting in price hikes and some vendors listing items in dollars. This shift prompted her and her friends to find a new, less-known paca, which they now refuse to share with visitors. The city saw approximately 14.4 million hotel guests in 2023 and aims for 19.5 million visitors by 2030, exacerbating these concerns among locals who feel their neighborhoods are becoming overwhelmed.
