King Juan Carlos Makes Rare Public Appearance Amid Self-Imposed Exile
King Juan Carlos of Spain, who has been living in self-imposed exile in the United Arab Emirates since 2020, made a rare public appearance in Paris. The former monarch attended a ceremony where he was awarded the Special Prize for Political Books, following the publication of his memoirs, 'Reconciliation'. The event was attended by his daughters, Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina, and his grandson, Felipe Juan Froilán. During the ceremony, King Juan Carlos delivered a speech expressing his gratitude for the award. His memoirs, co-authored with historian Laurence Debray, were initially published in France and later in Spain. The former king's exile followed controversies, including a scandal involving a hunting trip in Botswana and allegations of corruption linked to Saudi businesses. Despite these issues, he remains a significant figure in Spanish history.
