Canada Joins GCAP Fighter Program as Observer, Enhancing Security Collaboration
Canada has joined the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) as an observer, a multinational fighter development initiative involving the UK, Japan, and Italy. This move allows Canada to gain insight into the sixth-generation fighter development without committing to purchasing the aircraft. Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty announced the decision alongside UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting and other defense leaders. The GCAP, known as 'Tempest' in the UK, is expected to enter service around 2035. The program aims to enhance security collaboration among democracies in Europe and Asia, especially in light of recent naval activities by Russia and China near Japan.
