Australian Authorities Report First Mass Mortality Event Due to Bird Flu Among Native Birds
In Australia, authorities have reported what is suspected to be the first mass mortality event caused by the H5N1 bird flu virus among native birds. Helicopter surveillance revealed over 80 dead and sick greater crested terns on Baudin Rocks, near Robe, South Australia. This event comes just six weeks after the virus was first detected in the country. The disease has been spreading rapidly, with confirmed cases in various states including Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland. The virus has also been detected in silver gulls, raising concerns about its spread to other species and regions. Conservationists and experts are alarmed by the rapid escalation and the potential impact on wildlife, particularly endangered species like the Australian sea lions.
