FDA Warnings Highlight Risks of Mounjaro for Type 2 Diabetes Patients
Mounjaro, a prescription drug containing tirzepatide, was approved by the FDA in 2022 for treating adults with Type 2 diabetes. It functions by targeting two hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, to lower blood sugar and curb appetite, often resulting in weight loss. Despite its effectiveness, Mounjaro has been associated with several gastrointestinal side effects, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. More severe complications such as stomach paralysis, pancreatitis, and acute kidney injury have also been reported. The FDA has issued a black box warning for the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors based on animal studies. Additionally, lawsuits have been filed claiming that Mounjaro causes serious gastrointestinal issues, including stomach paralysis.
