Chicagoans Perceive Rising Crime Despite Stable Shooting and Homicide Rates
A new poll reveals that a significant portion of Chicago residents believe violent crime is on the rise, even though official data shows that the number of shootings and homicides in 2026 remains consistent with the previous year. The poll, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, found that 44% of residents think violent crime has increased, while 38% believe it has stayed the same, and 18% feel it has decreased. The perception of rising crime is closely linked to social media exposure, with those frequently encountering crime-related content online more likely to believe in an increase. The poll also highlights demographic differences in crime perception, with Republicans, older adults, and minority groups more likely to perceive an increase in crime.
