OpenAI Introduces Agent Plugins as GPT-5 Celebrates First Anniversary
OpenAI is celebrating the first anniversary of GPT-5 by introducing Agent Plugins, an open standard designed to allow reusable AI-agent extensions to work across compatible products. GPT-5, launched on August 7, 2025, replaced GPT-4o and several reasoning models as ChatGPT's default, featuring automatic routing for quick or deeper reasoning responses. Over the past year, OpenAI has released several updates to GPT-5, including versions 5.1 through 5.6, each enhancing different aspects of the model's capabilities. The introduction of Agent Plugins aims to standardize the packaging of reusable components, with a steering committee including major tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft.
