Research Highlights Structural Causes for Higher Female Mortality in Heatwaves
Recent studies have highlighted that more women than men are dying during heatwaves, but researchers argue that biology is not the primary cause. Instead, factors such as age, working conditions, and unequal access to rest are significant contributors. In Germany, for instance, the Robert Koch Institute reports that women constitute a larger portion of the oldest age groups, which partly explains the higher female death toll during heatwaves. Researchers like Laurie Parsons from Royal Holloway, University of London, emphasize that women often spend more time working above heat-stress thresholds compared to men, particularly in sectors like construction and garment factories. This is attributed to structural issues, such as women wearing more clothing for the same job and being less likely to take breaks. The study suggests that the real risk for women is exposure rather than biological differences.
