US EEOC Proposes Ending Mandatory EEO-1 Workforce Demographic Reporting, Potentially Saving Employers $275 Million
The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has initiated a proposal to eliminate the requirement for large employers to annually report workforce demographic data by race and sex through the EEO-1 report. This proposal, if finalized, would also remove similar reporting obligations for labor unions, public schools, and government agencies. Despite this potential change, employers would still need to maintain workforce records for discrimination investigations and compliance purposes. The EEOC estimates that this move could save employers approximately $275 million annually in compliance costs. EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas supports the proposal, citing it as consistent with a 'color-blind' approach to employment practices. However, Democratic Commissioner Kalpana Kotagal and several civil rights groups oppose the proposal, arguing that demographic data is crucial for monitoring workplace equity and identifying discrimination.
