Southwest Airlines to Benefit from New Concourse at Washington National Airport
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) is planning a significant expansion at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) with a new nine-gate concourse for Terminal 1. This development is set to replace the existing midcentury concourse known as 'the banjo,' which dates back to 1970. The project, estimated to cost $835 million by 2025, aims to modernize passenger facilities while maintaining the terminal's historic context. Southwest Airlines, the primary user of Terminal 1, along with Air Canada and Frontier Airlines, is expected to utilize the new concourse. The expansion will also include a new 'processor' building for check-in and baggage claim, potentially opening by 2031. The project follows the $1 billion Project Journey completed five years ago, which added a 14-gate concourse and new security checkpoints.
