New York State's Medicaid Spending Surpasses Education Budget, Raising Sustainability Concerns
New York State is now allocating more funds to its Medicaid program than to K-12 education, with Medicaid expenses reaching $39.4 billion for the 2025-26 fiscal year. This amount constitutes 26.5% of the state's total budget, surpassing the $37 billion spent on education. The report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli highlights that New York spends more per person on Medicaid than any other state in the U.S. The federal government is currently investigating Governor Kathy Hochul's administration for potential waste, fraud, and abuse within the Medicaid program. The state's budget also includes a $500 million one-time assistance to distressed hospitals. The increased spending on Medicaid, coupled with a decrease in health-related tax revenues, poses questions about the sustainability of the current spending trajectory.
