Kilembe Mines Faces Delays in Operations, Raising Concerns Among Local Communities
Eight months after the handover of Kilembe Mines Limited to SARAI Group Limited, there is growing concern over the lack of progress at the copper mining site. The transfer, which took place on May 3, 2025, was expected to revitalize the local economy in Kasese District, Uganda. However, minimal activity has been observed, leading to anxiety among community leaders and residents who anticipated economic benefits and job opportunities. The SARAI Group had committed to resuming operations swiftly, but local leaders report insufficient engagement and transparency from the company. The delay has been attributed to pending documentation, which was recently completed, according to State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Godfrey Kabbyanga. The government now expects SARAI Group to commence operations without further delay.
