Associated Press to Lay Off 20 U.S. Video Production Staff, Relocate Jobs to India
The Associated Press (AP) is set to lay off 20 video production staff in the U.S. on Friday, with plans to move these jobs to a new production hub in India. This decision, communicated by the union representing the affected journalists, also targets an additional 10 photo editors in the U.S. and 10 video production staff in London for layoffs, though their termination dates are not yet clear. Union leaders have expressed concerns that eliminating journalists with decades of experience and transferring their roles, particularly those covering American news, to India could compromise the quality of future coverage. Executive editor Julie Pace had previously announced the establishment of a new production hub in Noida, India, in June, stating that this initiative would 'affect' some U.S. staff and that the company was exploring production changes in other locations to increase the size of its production staff and enhance video and photo capabilities.
