2,500-Year-Old Golden Helmet Returned to Romania After Dutch Museum Theft
A priceless golden helmet, dating back 2,500 years, has been returned to Romania after being stolen from a Dutch museum. The Cotofenesti helmet, along with three golden bracelets, was taken from the Drents Museum in January 2025. After 14 months of investigations and diplomatic efforts, the artifacts were returned to Bucharest's National History Museum. The recovery was celebrated as a significant moment for Romania, with the artifacts viewed as relics of historical memory and national heritage. The theft had caused significant distress, with fears that the helmet might have been melted down due to its fame and distinctive appearance. The artifacts will be displayed to the public before undergoing restoration work.
