Canadian Government Attributes Decline in U.S. Travel to Trump Policies Amid Complex Data
The Canadian government has released a report indicating a 25% decline in Canadian travel to the U.S. in 2025, attributing this drop to policies implemented by President Trump. The report highlights that Canadians made 29.1 million trips to the U.S. in 2025, a decrease from 39 million in 2024. Analysts Laura Presley and Carter McCormick from Statistics Canada suggest that the shift in travel sentiment is linked to the 'America First' policies and tariffs introduced by the Trump administration. However, the report does not account for other factors that may have influenced these numbers, such as the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in late 2022, which had previously boosted travel numbers. The 2025 figures, while lower than the previous year, still surpass the pre-pandemic travel numbers of 2019, which stood at 25 million trips.
