Oregonians Prioritize Infrastructure Maintenance and Safety Amidst State Transportation Budget Crisis
Oregonians have identified maintaining and preserving highways and bridges, along with improving safety, as their top priorities for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). This feedback comes as ODOT faces a projected $200 million budget deficit for the 2027-29 budget cycle. A survey conducted between August and September by a workgroup appointed by Governor Tina Kotek gathered responses from approximately 8,650 residents across nearly all Oregon counties. The survey also revealed significant frustration with current spending, with many respondents advocating for more reliable public transit options and better budgeting practices for project delivery. A substantial portion of respondents, particularly from the Portland metro area, expressed reliance on public transportation and a desire for a system that offers affordable options beyond car ownership. Other concerns included eliminating perceived wasteful spending and increasing wildlife crossings, which was not an initial survey option.
