San Diego City Officials Approve Earlier Start Time for South Mission Beach Volleyball
San Diego city officials have approved a change allowing beach volleyball players at South Mission Beach to start playing at 6 a.m., moving the previous start time from 8 a.m. This decision follows nearly four months of discussions and a Change.org petition launched by the local volleyball community, which garnered almost 3,000 signatures. Joya Patel, director of strategic communications and spokesperson for Mayor Todd Gloria, confirmed that the city, including the Parks and Recreation Department, reached this agreement with representatives of the South Mission Beach volleyball regulars. The revised 6 a.m. start time will also be applied to other beach volleyball locations across the city, including Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla Shores, to ensure consistency. The issue began in late April when a park ranger warned players they could be cited for playing before 8 a.m., a municipal code regulation, reportedly due to noise complaints from nearby short-term rental guests.
