Henry Johnson's World War I Valor Recognized Posthumously with Medal of Honor
Henry Johnson, a member of the 369th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2015 by President Barack Obama. Johnson is recognized for his heroic actions during World War I, specifically for single-handedly repelling a German raid during the Battle of Château-Thierry. His extraordinary bravery and sacrifice have cemented his legacy, highlighting the significant contributions and valor of African American soldiers during the war. The 15th regiment of the New York National Guard, exclusively composed of Black soldiers, was among the most decorated units of World War I, fighting not only for liberty and democracy in France but also for racial equality.
