Nueva Pescanova Cancels Octopus Farm Plans Amid Backlash Over Animal Welfare Concerns
Nueva Pescanova, a Spanish seafood company, has decided not to proceed with its plans to establish the world's first octopus farm in Gran Canaria. The decision comes after significant backlash from scientists, animal welfare advocates, and organizations like Compassion in World Farming. The proposed farm would have housed octopuses in large communal tanks, feeding them wild-caught fish before slaughtering them in ice-cold water. Critics highlighted several issues, including the potential for aggressive behavior and cannibalism among octopuses in confined spaces, as well as the farm's high resource demands, which would have required 28,000 tonnes of wild-caught fish. The project faced sustainability and food security concerns, as it could have added pressure to already strained fish populations, threatening marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Despite the cancellation, Nueva Pescanova has not ruled out future applications for similar projects elsewhere.
