DLA Piper Partner Joins President Trump's Central Park Five Defamation Defense
President Trump has expanded his legal team in a defamation lawsuit concerning the overturned convictions of the Central Park Five. Caryn Schechtman, a senior lawyer from the prominent law firm DLA Piper, has joined the defense team. Schechtman, who leads DLA Piper’s securities and financial investigations practice, signed a brief filed by Trump in the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The brief seeks to overturn a previous decision that allowed the defamation case to proceed. This legal move comes as Trump faces criticism for his past comments about the Central Park Five, a group of men who were wrongfully convicted of a 1989 assault in New York City. The case has been a point of contention, with Trump having previously called for the death penalty for the accused, who were later exonerated.
