University of Wisconsin-Madison Research Partnership Unintentionally Aids Chinese Surveillance Technology, Report Claims
A new report from Strategy Risks indicates that a research partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) and China's Southeast University has unintentionally contributed to the advancement of China's surveillance and control systems. Established in 2017, the Joint Research Institute (JRI) focused on intelligent transportation, connected vehicles, and vehicle-road-cloud technologies. Strategy Risks found that China's Ministry of Public Security has since integrated JRI-advocated vehicle-road-cloud standards into national standards and deployed them across the country. These systems link onboard vehicle sensors, roadside sensors and cameras, and centralized cloud servers, functioning as both traffic management tools and mechanisms for surveillance and control, capable of real-time tracking and command issuance to vehicles. The report also highlights that federally funded UW-Madison physicists have participated in Tianlai, a radio astronomy experiment, which involved collaboration with ...
