East Hampton Files Lawsuit to Remove Large Art Installation
The Town of East Hampton has filed a lawsuit demanding the removal of a large art installation by artist Matt Johnson. The sculpture, titled 'Meditating Figure,' is a 60-foot-tall structure made of defunct shipping containers, depicting a stick figure in a lotus position. It is part of a group show at Montauk's art space, The Ranch. The lawsuit claims the sculpture is an 'unpermitted structure' on land restricted to agricultural use, despite previous art exhibitions on the site. The town, which owns the development rights to the land, is seeking the immediate dismantling of the artwork.
