Judge Rules Former Senator Sinema Can Be Sued Under North Carolina's 'Homewrecker' Law
A U.S. District Judge has ruled that former U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema can be sued under North Carolina's 'homewrecker' law. The lawsuit was filed by Heather Ammel, the ex-wife of Matthew Ammel, a member of Sinema's security detail with whom Sinema acknowledged having a romantic relationship. Sinema had argued that she could not be sued in North Carolina due to a lack of connection to the state. However, Judge David A. Bragdon rejected this argument, citing nine text messages Sinema sent to Matthew Ammel while he was in North Carolina as sufficient grounds for jurisdiction. The lawsuit alleges that Sinema interfered with Matthew and Heather Ammel's 'good and loving marriage,' pursuing Matthew Ammel despite knowing he was married. Matthew Ammel joined Sinema's security team after retiring from the Army in 2022 and accompanied her on various travels.
